The US Mail

About three weeks ago I had to mail my auto registration renewal to Texas because I live in Massachusetts and in Massachusetts, everything is harder than it needs to be. My insurance company, USAA, is in Texas, and because my registration renewal needed a stamp from my insurance agent, I needed to send it there. Yesterday, T and I saw a truck with a filthy license plate–it wasn’t even readable truth be told, but the driver had just gotten a new registration sticker so the top corner was cleaned off and there was this bright shiny red sticker there. It made us both chuckle a bit. Then, for the first time since I sent off the registration I realized we hadn’t gotten it yet. Well, we had to have it by February first, so I started to get a bit nervous and thought about calling USAA to see if they’d gotten the registration. Of course, two minutes later I pulled into my parking spot and got the mail on the way in. And there it was. New registration, new sticker. Voila!

I think this may be the first time I’ve ever renewed the registration on my car on time. :-)

Maybe just luck, but…

So this may not really qualify as a synchronicity but…

Today DHL was scheduled to pick up my laptop for delivery to a repair center between 2:30 and 8:00. My wife caught a ride home from work so I could be here. When she got home I decided to stop being such a tight fisted miser and ask if she wanted to go out and grab some dinner. She agreed and we got changed and grabbed our keys, wallet etc to leave. At that exact moment, the DHL guy (who we’d both completely forgotten about) knocked on the door. Yay! I gave him the computer and we marveled at how lucky we were that he came when he did or we would have missed him. We laughed because it’s so rare that we go out on a week night anyway–it was just odd that we decided to up and go out on a Monday night, especially when we were waiting for someone to come pick up a package. Then, when we got out to the car, the door was still slightly open and the dome light was on. If we hadn’t gone out for dinner, I would have gone out tomorrow morning at 5am to go to work and found a dead battery. So, whatever implulse it was that spurred me to go out at that particular time saved me two headaches–the timing allowed me to still have my computer picked up while avoiding a dead battery! Three cheers for luck, if not synchronicity.

Money, money, money

So yesterday while I was cleaning the apartment and going through old bills, I discovered we’d fallen a month behind on T’s student loan payments. I was annoyed by this because after the holidays we’re not exactly rolling in cash. An extra $140 bucks was going to be tough.

Then I found an old dividend check for $91 that came a couple weeks ago. Sweet! I thought, “well, that will help with the extra expense.”

Then, when I got the mail, there was a refund check from a credit card I’d overpaid on. It was for $56. So, the same day I needed an extra $140, I got it. I really wish it worked out that way all the time.
